DUAL DELIGHT! – SCONE'S SPITFIRE FOR TWO

Dual delight! – scone's spitfire for twoFor many years, the 'Average-Joe’ warbird enthusiast would stare in wonder as one of the most recognisable shapes and sounds of WWII flashed by, often entertaining thoughts of what such a thoroughbred would be like to fly, but knowing in their heart that was something they were never likely to find out. Fortunately things have changed and today no fewer than 15 two seat Spitfires are offering rides, with more on the way. Here we look at the first of these to come to Australia, including amusing anecdotes from Airframe Assemblies’ Steve Vizard about recovering the wreck that formed the basis of the project.

FRENCH FLAIR – THE DEWOITINE D.520

French flair – the dewoitine d.520The D.520 was born out of an earlier failure and despite its faults proved to be the aircraft best able to counter German and Italian fighters at the beginning of the war in Europe. It went on to arm the Vichy Armistice Air Force and fought against its former Allies over Syria, Lebanon and later Morocco and Algeria. The Germans, Italians and Bulgarians all operated the type to some degree, and later the Free French used recaptured examples through to the war's end. Here we look at the type’s development and its complicated service history.

Our Last Mystery Aircraft was a... SEVERSKY P.35

Our last mystery aircraft was a... seversky p.35The P-35, the predecessor of the Republic P-43 and by default the P-47, was the U.S. Army Air Corps' first mass-produced, all-metal, single-seat monoplane Pursuit aircraft. Often called the “Farmingdale Flash” by those who worked at Seversky’s Farmingdale factory, it was one of many designed by Alexander P. de Seversky and chief engineer Alexander Kartvel. Here we look at the type’s development which was honed through the air racing years and how it was later exported in numbers to Sweden, some of the two seat examples even found their way to Japan. It was one of the first USAAC fighters to engage Japanese forces when they attacked the Philippines and gave a reasonable account of itself despite the odds.

EAA AirVenture

Eaa airventureThe focus of the AirVenture Oshkosh article is on three aircraft in particular: the P-51B Mustang, Walt Bowe's F8F Bearcat (with Bernie Vasquez describing its restoration), and the PBY Catalina - the latter revealing the interior detail which turned the judges' heads.
