Red Phoenix Rising

Red Phoenix

Another of Karelia’s many lakes has given up its treasures, with the recovery of a rare Yak-1 fighter in June. The aircraft was lost in August 1943 when Junior Lieutenant Demidov approached his airfield without extending the aircraft’s flaps. The flight operations officer launched a red flare which forced a ‘go around,’ however Demidov didn’t extend the flaps on the second approach either and was waved off again. It was then that the engine began to run roughly due to fuel starvation and unable to reach the airfield, Demidov had to force land on the lake near the airfield.

Red Phoenix

Fewer than two weeks later an Il-2 Shturmovik broke the surface of the same lake. The aircraft was lost in November 1943 having been heavily damaged by a Bf109 after attacking an enemy airfield. The Il-2s gunner accounted for the attacker but was wounded. Pilot Skopintsev put the aircraft down on the ice and pulled him clear before the aircraft broke through the ice and sank.
