In this, the third instalment of our look at the Focke Wulf 190, we take a look at the few 190F and 190Ds series that have survived. Also included in this survey is the sole known surviving Ta-152, the ultimate tribute to designer Kurt Tank.
In this, the penultimate instalment of our Sea Fury / Fury series we concentrate on aircraft that are resident in the United States. Most of these have found their way to the Air Racing Circuit being heavily modified along the way, some so much so that they have little to do with Hawkers original design! Most have had their original 5 bladed prop Centaurus power plant replaced with to the four bladed prop Wright Cyclone. The reasons for this that there is a greater availability of American engines and parts, and perhaps American engineers are more familiar and comfortable with 'homegrown' power plants!
Over the past few years we have kept readers up to date on the initiative of Sydney based P-47 restoration effort headed by Robert Greinert to recover and restore to flying condition some early model 'Razorback P-47 Thunderbolts. Robert now had three 'Jugs' underway so we thought it time to pay another visit to check on progress.
Our last Mystery aircraft is the delightful Tipsy, which although built in small numbers proved popular with its owners. In this, the first of two parts we take a look at the design history and follow up in the next edition with a look at the survivors.
Many people will have seen the photographs of a gaggle of Harvards that have somehow overshot the runway and are making an attempt to land on a stretch of water. Comments have ranged from, 'these photos are fake!' to 'what were these guys thinking!?' to 'that is some amazing and disciplined flying!'
This is of course not the first time aircraft have been seen 'waterskiing' but it is the first time that it has been done as a formation. This article sets out a little background to the team and most importantly, the 'flight in question' as related by one of the pilots………don't try this at home!!
A vintage masterpiece in the form of DH.Rapide ZK-SWR took take to the air recently after rebuild at the Croydon Aircraft Co. and Southair Ltd. Wearing a lovely Swissair scheme the aircraft is owned by a syndicate of airline pilots. The full story of the restoration is told in this issue.
For the past decade a beautifully rebuilt metal - fuselage DH-60M Gipsy Moth has been displayed in a small transport museum in Victoria, Australia. Earlier this year the aircraft which had flown just four hours since a ground up overhaul took to the air again and the story of the flight to its new home is detailed by the new owner.
